Richard L. Doty, Ph.D., is a researcher in the field of olfactory functioning and dysfunction (anosmia). He is the director of the University of Pennsylvania's Smell and Taste Center in Philadelphia, and Professor within the Department of Otorhinolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery. [1]

Dr. Doty received his B.S. degree from Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, Colorado, in 1966, his MA degree in conjunction with NASA’s Ames Research Center from California State University, San Jose, in 1968, and his Ph.D. degree in comparative psychology from Michigan State University in 1971.[1]
He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of California, Berkley, from 1971 to 1973 in the field of behavioral endocrinology. He was also Postdoctoral Fellow, Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1973-1974 and [1] Director of the Human Olfaction Section, Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1974-1978
Dr. Doty is an editorial consultant to over 50 scientific and medical journals and to dozens of major corporations and governmental advisory committees.
Dr. Doty has authored or co-authored of over 350 professional publications, including 7 books. He is the editor of the 2nd edition of the Handbook of Olfaction and Gustation[1] (Marcel Dekker, 2003), a 2000+ page tome considered to be the Bible of the chemical senses field. His most recent books are the Neurology of Olfaction (Cambridge University Press, 2009), with Christopher Hawkes, and The Great Pheromone Myth (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010).
He is perhaps best known for having invented the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test or UPSIT[2] (commercially known as the Smell Identification Test), the first widely used standardized olfactory test. The UPSIT has been administered to an estimated half million persons since its introduction in the 1980s and has been translated into 13 different languages. This test has been heralded as the olfactory equivalent to the eye chart.
